NYTE City, 2099
The year is 2099. The world didn't end. It just stopped pretending it wouldn't. Things have changed dramatically in the last 100 years, and not necessarily for the better. Technology has metastasized beyond control. It feeds on the distrust, corporate greed, and malcontent of citizens who live within the city borders.
At street level, it's all about survival. In the skyscrapers crowding every block, private wars are plotted and regulated through the only currency that matters: Power.
From the air, much of the NYTE City Megalopolis, which covers the entirety of the Eastern Seaboard, seems like a new-aged hellscape. The silhouettes of glassy buildings are like monolithic teeth pushing up from the concrete, garbage, and blood of the streets below. Smog chokes the skies and glows orange at night, lit from below by the city's relentless, unblinking pulse. NYTE City is a nightmare born from broken promises; the twisted result of hope that couldn't survive what it built.
Violence is a daily constant, and there is no way to know when the next gang war, private corporate squabble, or underground revolt will upend the lives of the city's most vulnerable as they navigate their daily routines. While most threats are plainly visible, a hidden supernatural world threads through everything, masquerading as mundane. Much of the city now is populated with strange beings, and only a few understand the reality of what lurks beneath the surface.
It used to be, "If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere." It is hard to comprehend how twisted and maligned that has become.
In NYTE City, if you can make it here, someone will kill you and do it for less.
A World That Pushes Back
In Shadows, NYTE City is not a backdrop. It is an active participant.
Every action you take leaves a mark, every choice ripples outward through people, systems and forces far larger than you. You can steal a car, shoot your way out of a problem or burn down a corporate front — but the city will notice… Someone always notices.
You can act without restraint. The city won't stop you... but it will respond.
Citizens talk. Fixers remember. Gangs retaliate. Corporations “audit”.
Law enforcement may be stretched thin, but it is never truly absent — only delayed, redirected, or bought. Power in NYTE City does not come from doing whatever you want. It comes from understanding who is watching, and who benefits. Violence solves problems quickly but creates bigger ones. Reputation travels faster than bullets and enemies don't disappear when they hit the pavement. They leave vacancies, power struggles, and people who want to know your name.
And then there are the others.
NYTE City has an undercurrent that most people learn to ignore. Old myths didn't vanish; they adapted. Vampires own nightclubs and blood banks. Werewolves clock in for security work and disappear on certain nights. Fae courts negotiate contracts with finer print than any corporation, and they never miss a clause. Also, Kpop. The Fae own that.
Magic exists; the myths exist. They stay hidden because they must. Individually, people are thoughtful. In groups, they become fearful, reckless, and cruel. So, the creatures of the night remain unseen — some by choice, others by ancient agreement. When dealing with the supernatural, understand a simple truth: drawing attention is how you die, get bound, or erased.
Shadows is not a heroic world. It is a reactive one. NYTE City pushes back — with laws, with money, with teeth, and with things that never reach the headlines, the crime stats, or the public briefings. The more you push, the harder it responds. Not because it's cruel, but because it's crowded, ancient, and very tired of being treated like it doesn't bite.
The city won't stop you from making bad choices. It just makes sure you live with them.
Who Are You?
You've seen the city. You've felt the pressure. Now the question is simpler…and harder.
Who are you in a place like this?
Shadows isn't about playing a character sheet. It's about stepping into a life and seeing what survives when NYTE City starts pushing back. You can be almost anyone here: a street doc holding the line in a forgotten neighborhood, a fixer balancing favors like live grenades, a corporate defector trying to stay ahead of their past, or something older and stranger wearing a human face because it's safer that way.
You can choose violence. You can choose restraint. You can try to help people. You can try to profit. You can try to disappear. The city doesn't judge your choices, but it does remember them.
Shadows is for players who want to feel the grime and the tension, but still believe that cleverness, empathy, and courage can matter. It's for those who want danger with weight, power with cost, and hope that has to be earned rather than assumed.
You don't need to know who you'll become by the end of the story. But you should know who you are when it begins — and what lines you think you won't cross.
NYTE City has a way of testing that assumption.
